Celebrating Summer's End

It seems like I was just writing about summer vacation beginning.  Summer has gone so fast, but I think that is because it was such a good summer this year.  School starts tomorrow, so we decided to take our last day of summer vacation and do something fun.  We spent the day at Disneyland and C alifornia Adventure.  Shannon was excited last night about the idea of have a "Family Day" today (even though Kevin is still in Hawaii and couldn't be with us.)  It was a wonderful day at the parks since most schools have already started.   There weren't any crowds there and we could walk onto the rides without waiting in line.   It was amazing how much you can do there when there aren't a lot of people there!

Kelly's hair is much shorter and lighter.  It looks so nice.  Thanks Heather!

Kelly is more excited than her sisters about school starting tomorrow.  She has learned not to take the privelage of going to school for granted anymore. (I'm not sure all kids think of going to school as a privelage like Kelly does.)  Shannon and Megan are happy to go see their friends.

As many of you are already aware, there is a show on all the major TV networks this Friday at 8:00.  It is Called STAND UP TO CANCER.   This is quote from their website,  "Here comes the event that will make television and cancer history.  Watch one night, only, Friday, September 5th at 8pm ET/PT, live and commerical free.  Broadcast simultaneously on ABC, CBS, and NBC.  Over 50 of the biggest names in entertainment, sports and music will come together to stand up to cancer.  Talk to one of your favorite stars at our live phone bank.  And catch the world premier performance of the new hit single, "Just Stand Up!"  This is Where the End of  Cancer Begins."    There will include a part on childhood cancer.  Bailey is one of the kids that will be shown.  Go Here to see the website for Stand up 2 Cancer.

I'm so thrilled for Kelly (and her classmates) that she gets to return to school tomorrow!! Yea! I'm sure her sisters and her friends don't take the privilege of going to school for granted now, either. Kelly continues to teach us all. What a great day; I'm celebrating the victory, too, in her honor.

Go get 'em, Kelly, Shannon, and Megan! Have a great year.

Hugs, hallelujahs, and hoorays!

To most people, it's the first day of school. To Kelly, it's return from exile. I'll bet your friends are going to be as happy to see you as you are to see them.

I just found your blog (from another blog). Your story is touching. I think you are in great hands at CHOC (my nephew spent six months in the NICU at CHOC). They are great people. Stay strong.

By the way, I grew up in Mission Viejo too. Went to Los Alisos Jr. High and Mission Viejo High School. Hope the school year treats you well and that you are on the road to recovery.

Hi Kelly,

How's French? I found that a head cold definitely improves one's French pronunciation. So does a clothespin applied to the nose, but this is definitely uncool.

In many ways, French is a funny language. Of all the languages directly derived from Latin, it's probably least like its parent. Believe it or not, it borrowed quite a bit from the Germanic invaders. Le jardin (garden) is a case in point. There's not a trace of the Latin "hortus" in it.

Then again, languages, and how they are perceived, are funny. I remember being in the hospital after an operation. The kid in the next bed and I got into an argument. He said he figured French kids were way smarter than American kids. I said: "How do you figure that?" He said: "They have to think what they want to say in English, then translate it into French, say it in French, listen carefully to the answer in French, and translate it back into English in their heads, so they can understand it." I probably started my reply by calling him something not very nice, but I told him French kids didn't do all that extra translating. They just thought in French and spoke in French. It was much simpler that way (for them). He couldn't accept that. I said: "Well, you know that some people in Canada speak French, right?" He did. "And you know that other people in Canada speak English, right?" He knew that, too. I said: "Okay. We've got a Canadian nurse here. Next time she comes in, we'll ask her. Will you accept her answer?" He said he would. She came in later that day. She upheld my position. But sometimes, it's a hard one to come to grips with. Things about their language that strike us as totally odd, are perfectly normal from their point of view, and vice versa, I'm sure.

Enjoy your French class!

Hi Kelly! I just learned about you via the Eclectic Paperie email newsletter today. You are a darling girl and I love your smile!

I'm a 3-year Stage IV colon cancer survivor. I also had every-other-week chemo (also CPT-11 and Avastin, plus some other drugs)so we have something in common!

I want you to know that I'll be GLUED to my TV set tonight to watch the Stand Up To Cancer show. We need to find a cure for this disease.

I hope you have a great school year this year. I'll be checking in on your blog from time to time to see how you're doing.

I have a blog, too, if you'd like to take a peek: http://themessonmydesk.blogspot.com

Giant hugs to you,
Renée K in Montana

Kelly,
I am so glad that you got to spend your last day of summer at Disneyland. You all must have had a blast. I am so happy for you. Going back to school must be sooo exciting. I love your new haircut. ;) Well, I hope the first 2 days of school were great for you and your sisters. I really had fun shopping with you all. We should do it again soon.

Hi Kelly - today I went to Michael's (really we were supposed to be going to Staple's for work) and I bought this hot pink stamp pad that I am hoping to use with my Sophie stamp. I cannot wait to see her and hope she fits on the stamp pad. The pads all seemed to be pretty standard size so I think it will be okay. I know you like red but I thought she looked like a hot pink kind of moose ^..^

hugs,

Pat
