Almost like Normal

It has been a pretty good week for Kelly. After having such a better chemo week last week, she did get sick a couple times this week, but in general, is feeling pretty good. You would never know she is fighting cancer by looking at her. She looks so healthy and normal. We are so grateful she is handling her treatments so well.

She is really trying to get back into some normal activities. In addition to her home tutoring, she has been participating in activities with her Trailmates group, a father daughter program through the YMCA. They went kayaking in LaJolla last weekend. I'll try to post some photos later (they're in Kevin's laptop right now.) Last night she went to a play at Mission Viejo High School, where she would be going to school. It was fun for her to see some friends she hasn't seen in a long time. She also started volunteering for the Pacific Symphony again and helped with one of their family concerts at the Performing Arts Center this morning. This is something she and Kevin did a lot last year, and she finally felt up to doing it again this week. And I am trying to let her get out in crowded places a bit more. This was hard to do at first, since we are always cautious about exposing her to germs with her lower than average blood counts and immune system, but she is at a point where she needs to be with people besides us and participate in some of her "normal" activities. It is so good for her to be with friends her own age now! Please feel free to come visit her as long as you are healthy.

It is also great to leave her a message her by clicking on "comments" below. There are directions in the right margin if you aren't sure how to post a comment. It is so good for all of us to see encouraging messages and she loves to see people are thinking about her. Thanks to all of you that take a minute to write to her - it means more than you know.

One exciting this happened to her a couple days ago. There is a wonderful volunteer group in our area called Room to Heal. They redo kids' bedrooms that are seriously ill so they have a nice place for rest and relaxation (and of course healing!) Our pediatrician knows one of the ladies in this group and told them about Kelly. So they contacted me and came to see Kelly. They measured her room and talked to her about how she would like it to look. Those of you that know her will not be surpised to hear that she wants a room that looks a cabin in the snowy woods, and of course there needs to be a moose in the woods! They already have some ideas and Kelly is more than excited. They will start painting her walls in 3 or 4 weeks.
Kelly really has been blessed with some wonderful people along her journey and this is sure another good example of that.

Kelly has her next chemo treatment this Tuesday after her blood levels are checked Monday. Her next MRI is April 9th and we are praying it will remain clear like her last one.

Thanks again to everyone who has contributed to Relay for Life. It feels great to give back and do something to help fight this disease.

Dear Kelly,

Transforming your room into a cabin in snowy woods with Thidwick looking in at you sounds great. Do you know Thidwick? He's the central character in an early Dr. Seuss book called "Thidwick, the Kind-hearted Moose." Believe it or not, I once had a room mate who memorized the whole thing. If he drank enough beer (usually about 3), he could be prevailed upon to recite it.

I haven't seen the book in years, but maybe you could find it in the library.

Enjoy your freedom and increased contact with your peers.

Hold onto those seeds for Tuesday!

How Awesome! A room makeover! I love that idea.. do you think they would do mine? lol I have wanted to do Kasey's room, but since diagnosis.. he has accumulated so much stuff it will take me forever to clean it out to get to the walls.
Ok.. we have a date Miss Kelly. You and Kasey have your MRI's on the same day next month. I don't know about you guys.. but I am starting to get PMS (pre-mri syndrome) I want so badly for Kasey's and your MRI to read.. Clear or.. Stable if nothing else!
I am glad you have had a good week! Keep up the good work!
Big Hugs to you guys!

Kelly,
What a fabulous idea for a retreat! I have heard of that organization before and it is wonderful that they are doing a room for you!

And Kathy, I know how you feel about letting your "little" girl out in the world of germs! When Danielle was in the middle of her treatment she wanted desperately to attend Warped Tour (an all day outside event with bands playing from noon til dusk) I was a nervous wreck all day, texting her every hour to make sure she was in shade and drinking enough water and just staying away from "yuk"! She made it...and so did I!

Glad to hear you are doing well and I will be thinking of you for your next MRI, they come up too quickly, don't they?

Enjoy!

Hey Kelly!
Thought of you and your family really strongly this weekend. We were up at the cabin and woke up Sunday morning to a foot of new snow. It was so beautiful! It took us about an hour to get the snow off the car and for Mark to clear the driveway. Luckily, the snow was pretty soft so it was easier to move. Nick has some pictures he took of his car buried with snow. If I get a chance I'll e-mail them to you.
Sounds like everything is going really well for you. That makes us very happy! Can't wait to see your room with the snow and the moose. What a great idea for an organization to do that. Please give your family a big hug from us. Mr. Turtle is cruising around now and eating dogfood again. He likes the spring! You take care!
Love,
Laurie and Mark

Happy St. Patrick's Day! Love to hear the great things you're doing and the things that are going on! I'm with everyone else - I can't wait to see photos of your very own cabin in the woods! How many can say they have their very own moose too? Mt. Hood just got a ton of new snow over the weekend - now I'm dreaming of a snowy cabin too!

Keep feeling good!! Here's something in honor of St. Patrick's Day for you:

Wishing you a rainbow
For sunlight after showers -
Miles and miles of Irish smiles
For golden happy hours -
Shamrocks at your doorway
For luck and laughter too,
And a host of friends
that never ends
Each day your whole life through!

Love you lots!!
Aunt Tracy
