A Different Game Plan

We went to the clinic at CHOC today so Kelly could begin her new round of chemotherapy. It seems her protocol keeps changing. We were originally told she would be receiving Irinotecan for 2 weeks, 5 days a week, then have a 2 week break. Now they told us they are going to give her a much stonger dose, once every two weeks. She will also be receiving Avastin by IV, but they don't want to give it to her until after she had the gamma knife procedure because the side effects might interfere. Today she had her first Irinotecen IV and she is tolerating it very well. Although she did come home and go right to sleep on the couch. In two weeks she will have both Irinotecan and Avastin and will continue that way every two weeks. She is very happy she doesn't have to go into the clinic everyday like we had first been told we would be doing. It was very confusing to keep hearing the changes, so they finally paged Dr. Kirov, her primary oncologist who plans her protocol, to come talk to us. After he explained his decision based on the lastest studies with Kelly's type of tumor, it made more sense. It was good to hear him talk about it.

Thursday we go down to San Diego for the gamma knife. She has two appointments on Thursday, then the procedure will be Friday morning. At least we don't have to worry about working her chemotherapy around it as were originally thought.

A Huge Thanks to everyone for all of your support. From the wonderful meals, rides for Megan and Shannon, and all of the positive thoughts and prayers. Keep the prayers coming that this new chemo will prevent another recurrence. Kelly loves to read comments left for her here, so please take a moment to cheer her on.

Kathy

Kelly and Kathy's quote of the day -
"If nothing ever changed, there'd be no butterflies!"
Yeah for Change! This sounds like it is an easier path to follow for you ladies, with a lot less driving and waiting. Kelly stay tough and keep that beautiful smile on your sweet face.

Hi Kelly!
Do you know who Gumby is? It sounds like you and your mom have had to be more flexible than him! I sure like your doctors though - this protocol sounds like a lot nicer schedule for you! And it sure sounds like they're all working hard to get the best plan to get that cancer out of there!!

Can't wait to see you!! I want to ask if there is anything I can bring for you - but I'm afraid your answer will be "Emily"! See you soon!
Love & Hugs!

Hi Kelly,

That's fantastic news that you don't have to spend so much time at the clinic! Wish we were still there!

Hi Kelly,
Your Aunt Tracy is right-" Gotta be a Gumby" I have often found that I had to do that with frequent changes! Take one step at a time--Once you do that you will find you are one step closer to ending your treatment and one step closer to enjoying your wonderful life ahead. Enjoy La Jolla! Call us if you need anything!

Good morning Kelly,
I'm praying that this will be just the trick to kick that cancer's butt (can I say butt on a blog?) I don't know your doctors but I believe in you and the fact that you are stronger than any cancer. Can I do anything? Are any more mooses (meeses) needed? I spoke with your Dad and he's counting the days.
Love from all in New Jersey,

Kelly
You are fortunate to have so many strong family, friends and doctors who love and care about you. This passionate and dedicated response by so many is a testament to what a wonderful, smart and optimistic person you are Kelly.
There is always something good that comes from something bad…for you Kelly, you get the benefit of realizing how important you are to the lives of so many people. Most do not realize this until much, much later in life, while others never do.
As soon as you overcome this challenge, your day to day life will return to normal, but you will have an advantage that your friends may not fully appreciate. Your appreciation for every day things and the family and friends you share them with will be so much sweeter.
Stay strong, stay positive and know that we care

Hey there Kelly :) Sounds like things are moving along at top notch speed in the right direction! Keep up the good work Kelly. Don't tell anyone- this is just between you and me- but I think I just ate a bug- I'm pretty sure it was hiding in my cereal, posing as an "oat." It was on my spoon with my yogurt and other oats, looking slightly less oatie- and I thought about inspecting it further but a thorough oat inspection inspection could take days- even years- and I was hungry so-in it went! Have you ever seen "Man vs. Wild" (it's very useful- shows you how to get out of volcanoes etc should you ever have the need)- that guy eats bugs ALL the time- so rather than a gross bug eater, I'll just consider myself as a rugged outdoors-woman! Hope you get to mix some good fun in down in San Diego- there's a super fun dessert place in downtown SD called Extraordinary Desserts- they put flowers on their cakes! (roses etc are actually super tasty- but then what do I know- I eat bugs for breakfast).

Ros :) (from GAP)

Hey Kelly,
We're glad you don't have to drive back and forth so much...a little more down time will give you time to rest up for Turkey Day. I wanted to tell you that you really amaze me with the updates you write yourself. You should be an author with the ability to write like that! When you can write in away that it makes the reader feel like they are in a conversation with you right then and there..it's a real gift. What talent..I am jealous. Take care and we hope to see you soon.

Hi Kelly,
I have lunch every Thursday with your Aunt Tracy. She told me she wasn't able to meet this week. I was so glad to hear why. She will be with you instead!!! I will miss not seeing her but I'm so glad she is able to be with you and your mom in La Jolla. I use to work in La Jolla, it's a lovely place. You will have wonderful support around you as you have your treatment. Can't ask for much better. I'll be thinking about you and praying for you as well. Stay strong and positive. Take care - Kim

Dear Kelly,
I was reading your friend's comments and I saw the one from your friend who ate a bug. I think she is on to something. I understand that bugs are very high in protein and are a delicacy in different countries. PLUS I don't think they interfer with your food allergies. Are you allergic to crickets??? or ants? (of course you're not allergic to Aunts)
Love always,
Aunt Denise
P.S. Your Dad sent me a picture from the Bishop Museum in Hawaii. I bet Shannon (how is your head??) and Megan are sorry that we didn't go.

Hi Kelly,

I was really happy to read the message YOU left for everyone. You and your mom really have a wonderful way of telling a story or writing so that it is easy and interesting to read.

We have been to the area in San Diego where you are having the procedure. It is beautiful there. Hope you have time to walk around.

My husband is having a medical test that day also so I will be thinking of you while I am waiting for him.

One more thing down, right? Hope you have soemthing fun planned for the weekend when you get home.

Miss seeing you all around here.

Keeping you in my thoughts and prayers,

It's Kathy and Henry from the Mahwah book group again, just signing in to wish you all the best Thursday and especially on Friday, and of course all through the coming weeks of chemo. It was so nice to read the porcupine story in your own voice. Here's another German phrase for you -
"Toi, toi, toi!" (pronounced like toy in English). Translation: Good luck!

Hi Kelly and family!

Although I think about you everyday, I am doing so especially today (Thursday) and tomorrow. You are always in my prayers, as well. I am gratified to know that many, many others are doing so, too. It was good to read that your doctors continue to review and adjust your treatment plan to maximize your success in this battle. May you all stay strong and brave! I hope you have a chance to enjoy La Jolla during this beautiful weather.

Blessings,

Dear Kelly,
I just found out that Hairspray is available on DVD. We have a copy here at the library. I know your sisters loved it. I just thought it might cheer you up while you're recuperating. I haven't seen it but I understand that "You can't stop the beat!" They can't stop the Kelly either.
